FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – ROCO (River Oaks Chamber Orchestra) launches its 2017-18 “In Concert” series with “To the Beat of a Different Drummer,” September 22nd at Miller Outdoor Theatre and September 23rd at The Church of St. John the Divine.
The program features the world premiere commission of Five Views of an Unfamiliar Tune, a percussion concerto by pioneering computer-music composer, Paul Lansky. Written to highlight the technical skills and expressive gifts of ROCO’s principal percussionist, Matthew McClung, each movement of the work explores a different instrument: vibraphone, marimba, bongos, tom-toms, and – in an inspired move - children’s toys. This follows ROCO’s practice of both choosing its soloists from its principal musicians, and offering them a chance to either commission a new work or perform one from the existing repertoire.
Victor Yampolsky, one of ROCO’s favorite artistic partners, returns to conduct. The rest of the program features the rarely-performed Symphony No. 2 by Kurt Weill, along with Paul Hindemith’s Cupid and Psyche, Igor Stravinsky’s Dumbarton Oaks, and, as usual, some additional ROCO surprises.
This performance is funded in part by the Kurt Weill Foundation for Music, Inc., New York, NY.
